Hospital in Hawaii Receives New Technology For Wheelchair Users
A new piece of advanced technology has been brought to Hawaii that allows paralyzed patients who have suffered spinal cord injury, MS and other life altering illnesses – to walk again independently.
The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific has been selected as one of 10 leading rehabilitation hospitals to partner with Berkeley Bionics to conduct investigational trials on eLEGS Pro, a wearable, battery powered exoskeleton that enables wheelchair users to stand and walk. A total of eight local residents will participate in the trials.
eLegs Pro, voted as CNN’s “Top 10 Innovations of 2010” and Time’s “50 Best Innovations of 2010,” this new piece of technology provides unprecedented knee flexion on those who wear it, which translates into the most natural human gait available among exoskeletons. This is only the beginning of a new era for those enduring through spinal cord injury and other life-altering illnesses, who have always been told a wheelchair would be their only source of movement for the rest of their life – there is now a real hope of walking independently now for everyone.
