The statistics on spinal cord injury in America 2011

  • There are 12,000 new cases of spinal cord injury in the U.S. each year.
  • Approximately 10% affect children under the age of 16.
  • At least 30 people sustain a spinal cord injury resulting in paralysis every day in the U.S.
  • Approximately 50% of spinal cord injuries occur in the cverical region (neck), affecting the ability to breathe as well as the upper and lower body function. The other 50% of this type of injury occur to the thoracic region (back), affecting upper and lower body functions.
  • Some of the most common causes of spinal cord injuries in children and adolescents include motor vehicle accidents, diving accidents, trampolines and falls.
